In 2011 experienced and emerging New Zealand architects and designers were challenged to pit their design talents against 10 of the world’s best architects. Leading architects, including Pritzker prize winner Zaha Hadid, and Jaime Velez (who was part of the design team behind the world’s tallest building in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa) were challenged to design a limited collection of chairs using Formica materials.
An extraordinary collection of sculptured chairs created from Formica materials was exhibited in Auckland and from it, the Formica Formations Design Competition was created. The competition attracted 54 high calibre entries, a considerable achievement in itself given the time it takes to conceptualise and create a design. The judging panel reviewed the designs independently then consulted to mutually agree on the winners. They were looking for not only creative design and innovative use of the material, but also feasibility of production.
